Christian Social Media Truth vs Lies

Let’s set the record straight… There are some commonly told lies that you have probably heard over the last few years relating to being a Christian and using Social Media.  We are here to tell you… Don’t believe them.  Why?  Because if you do, as a Christian, you will miss out on one of the greatest tools to reach our world for Jesus.  And that’s exactly what you don’t want to happen.

Here are the Lies…

Lie #1: Social Media is a Huge Waste of Time

It is certainly true that social media can be a huge “time thief.” You’ve probably experienced logging on to your social media for what you intended to be only a short period of time, and the next thing you know, there just went 10X’s (ten times) the amount of time you were intending to spend.  So now, whenever you hear someone say, “social media is just a huge waste of time” you just go along with accepting that statement because you have experienced this to be true for you in the past.  However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Here is the KEY to preventing social media from being a waste of time and stealing valuable minutes/hours/days/years of your life…

Interact on social media with a core purpose in mind other than just browsing to see what’s happening.

Think about it.  Social media has become one of the major forms of communication in our world today.  Businesses rely heavily on it to market themselves and sell their products and services, celebrities rely on social media to maintain and build their fan base, politicians use it to influence voters when running for political offices, and every news outlet we can think of uses social media to disseminate their messaging.  If social media was such a huge waste of time, most of these entities would not put so much time, money, and effort into their usage of social media.  But because they do, we know there must be great value in using social media which makes it well worth the time put in.  With that being said, what do most all of these have in common when it comes to social?

Answer:  Staying hyper-focused on using it for a specific core purpose

For example, if it’s a business using social media well…  They are going to use social media to talk about their products or services.  They are going to be constantly highlighting the features and benefits or giving testimonials from their customers.  I think you get the point.

The KEY for social media to not be a huge waste of your time is to have a specific core purpose in mind whenever you interact on social media.  For you as a Christian, at Social Media Missionary® we believe this core purpose should be The Great Commission given to us by Jesus…  That is, the non-optional mandate given to every single follower of Jesus Christ to tell others about Him and make disciples.

The fact of the matter is, YES social media can be a huge waste of your time if you are using it incorrectly as a Christian.  However, if you are using it correctly, you could be making a HUGE impact in influencing people in a positive, Christian way!  It all depends on if you are using it correctly or not.  Unfortunately, most Christians still don’t know how to use social media correctly to influence their world for Jesus.  But, we at Social Media Missionary® are dedicated to changing that!  That’s why we have created a specific Membership Program for Christians who are tired of wasting their time on social media and want to get serious about reaching their world for Jesus.

Also, we have another blog post on this topic of social media wasting your time.

Lie #2: Social Media is for “kids”

This is simply, not true.  Social media has become one of the world’s most common forms of communication used by a wide age range of people from literally all over the world.

Lie #3: Being Effective on Social Media Takes a lot of Time

Wrong.  Knowing the proper strategies and techniques is the key to being highly effective and impactful on social media.  Whether you spend a lot of time or little time on social media, its all about ‘what you are doing’ on social media with your time that matters most.  In other words, you can either spend a little or a lot of time being effective or a little or a lot of time being ineffective.  That’s why we teach specific strategies and techniques on how to maximize your impact on social media.

The KEY is to get maximum impact for whatever amount of time you are spending on social media.

So whether you have a little or a lot of time to spend on social media, when you use our specially designed AP’s (Action Plans) we believe they will help you become super efficient and effective with your time on social media.

Lie #4: As a Christian, You Should Stop Spending so Much Time on Social Media

This depends. Here’s why… as we talked about in #1, it’s all about HOW you are spending your time on social media. Imagine if you are spending lots of time on social media being a great positive influence for the Kingdom of God. Should you stop? Maybe the only time certain people hear anything about God or their need for Him is when they see your content and interactions on social media. What if you suddenly went away?

However, on the flip side, if you are a Christian and all you do is spend tons of time on social media and that time spent has little to nothing to show for in reaching your world for Jesus, maybe you should stop spending so much time on it and do something else more productive with your time that would bring Glory to God. OR, if this IS you, instead of decreasing the amount of time you spend on social media, turn that wasted time spent into highly productive and fruitful time spent on social media. If you don’t know how to do that, we are here to help!

We teach all about how to do this in our Members-Only Mission RoomCheck it out!
